Those of you who read our Spring '09 issue should recognize the name Philip Pledger. Pledger, who graduated from UNC in '09 is now playing guitar in Caleb Caudle and the Bayonets. The band, which also includes Caleb Caudle (vocals, guitar), Kyle Caudle (bass) and Chad Newsom (drums), released a new album on April 17. Snake River Canyon was produced by Jon Ashley, who has worked with The Avett Brothers and Band of Horses. And Ryan Monroe of Band of Horses played keyboards on the album.
The album blends classic americana with tinges of rock and indie influences. The beginning of the first song, "So Gone", has a sense of building anticipation that lets the listener know something great is coming. And it doesn't disappoint. The album builds in energy from song to song and includes both tender ballads and harder, up tempo songs. High points include "Skeleton Tree", "DLMG" and "Moonlight Mile." Caudle demonstrates seemingly effortless songwriting abilities. He is an artist with a lot of potential, and this is definitely a band to keep your eye on. There's only a week and a half of classes left, but there are plenty of art events you don't want to miss! Here are just a few worth checking out.
April 16-20, Union Cabaret - UNC Pauper Players present: Into the Woods ($7 student, $12 gen. admission)
When a Baker and his Wife learn they've been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell, swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk). What begins a lively irreverent fantasy in the style of "The Princess Bride" becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children. (www.unc.edu/pauper)
April 16-20, FedEx Global Center - "Searching for Spinoza": UNC opera world premiere ($5 students, $10 seniors, $15 gen admission. *Tickets can only be bought at www.spinozaeffect.com)
UNC Opera presents the world premiere of this collaboration between UNC music alumna Suzanne Ishee, the producer of Broadway CenterStage in New York, and Thomas Conroy of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, composer and librettist for the piece. The musical chronicles the life of Dutch philosopher Baruch/Benedictus d’Spinoza, a champion of the separation of church and state and founder of European rationalism. April 16-17 at 8 p.m.; April 18-20 at 7:30 p.m. Nelson Mandela Auditorium, FedEx Global Education Center. ( www.spinozaeffect.com)
