What is Uncharted?

Uncharted is a PDF art magazine designed to enrich the arts education of students at UNC Chapel Hill as well as promote the artistic endeavors of individuals within Chapel Hill and its surrounding communities. But Uncharted is more than just a journal; it will be a way to connect the arts community. After all, art is about communication.

The name Uncharted comes from an abbreviation for “UNC Art Education”, but it also speaks to the vast territory of undiscovered and/or underrepresented talent within Chapel Hill and its surrounding communities. It is the mission of Uncharted to promote participation in artistic expression, collect and share displays of art and art initiatives within the Chapel Hill community, and stimulate academic discussion about art itself in addition to its presence surrounding social issues.

The Magazine
Uncharted features articles dealing with a variety of topics including:
  • general interest articles
  • personal reactions or reviews of current art works or performances,
  • exploration of social issues or topics of social justices represented in art
  • and Op Ed pieces by professors or professionals on difficult questions such as “What is art?” or “How do you grade art?”

Each issue of Uncharted also profiles:

  • student artists
  • art groups
  • class projects

Artcles will include interviews and text describing their visions.

The Website

The Uncharted website will further incorporate student body participation with primarily student submitted features. The website will include:

  • a current and updated community calendar
  • links to venues and student organizations
  • student reviews
  • additional articles
  • and student or community blogs.

How can you get involved?

Uncharted Magazine is currently looking for staff members.  Contact us for more information about how you can join our team! Some of the positions we are looking for include writers, photographers, copywriters, layout designers, and marketing staff.

We would also like to invite any and all arts organizations on campus or in the community to become involved by sharing their missions and events with us. To be added to our organization list, email your organization name, primary contact information, website, and a brief description of the organization to Katie Sternowski at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Thank you, and come again soon!

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers a rich cultural environment for one of the nation’s most competitive universities and, as we are sure you all agree, one of the best all around. From Carolina’s spirit on campus to the rigor of acadmia, we seem to always reserve an innate warmth for Chapel Hill. And during one of the most transitional periods in our lives, we are constantly searching for new outlets for expression. These offerings of the self are meant to be shared with a community, to reach out to people, to make connections.

Uncharted Magazine provides a medium through which people can share their expressions of the self -- their art -- with the Chapel Hill community. This magazine is a unique collection of virtually unbounded expressions of art. You will find articles relating to music, performance art and visual art, three disciplines that are distinct, yet extremely intertwined.

Uncharted is a publication for the community by the community, so your input is greatly valued. Readers can register online on Uncharted’s website, create an artist profile and upload articles, art, photos and whatever else you may wish to include. In this way, Uncharted is not only a medium, but a networking tool designed to connect the community through its art. There are no limitations or guidelines, only freedom of expression.

Uncharted is pleased and excited to release its first issue to the Carolina community, and just as excited to receive your feedback. Put off those papers and problem sets just a bit longer to enjoy the articles that follow. If you find that you want your artistic voice to be heard, submit your art and articles online at www.uncartmag.com. And so, it is with great pleasure that we are able to introduce to you the first ever issue of Uncharted Magazine, where expression is free and the arts are appreciated.
