Those of you who read our Spring '09 issue should recognize the name Philip Pledger. Pledger, who graduated from UNC in '09 is now playing guitar in Caleb Caudle and the Bayonets. The band, which also includes Caleb Caudle (vocals, guitar), Kyle Caudle (bass) and Chad Newsom (drums), released a new album on April 17. Snake River Canyon was produced by Jon Ashley, who has worked with The Avett Brothers and Band of Horses. And Ryan Monroe of Band of Horses played keyboards on the album. The album blends classic americana with tinges of rock and indie influences. The beginning of the first song, "So Gone", has a sense of building anticipation that lets the listener know something great is coming. And it doesn't disappoint. The album builds in energy from song to song and includes both tender ballads and harder, up tempo songs. High points include "Skeleton Tree", "DLMG" and "Moonlight Mile." Caudle demonstrates seemingly effortless songwriting abilities. He is an artist with a lot of potential, and this is definitely a band to keep your eye on.
